What is Watu Australia?
Watu in the Swahili language means ‘PEOPLE’.
Watu Australia is a project about people, for people.
This is a community-curated platform, run by a collective of African-Australians. We aim to share the voices and experiences of people like us, one story at a time.
Our aim is to challenge the stereotypes about African communities. It’s about elevating migrant stories. It’s about positive representation. And, most importantly, it’s about demystifying the perception of African-Australian youth.
Our vision
To inspire and elevate the African diaspora in order to disrupt and demystify stereotypes
Our founding organisations
Watu Australia was co-initiated by the Scanlon Foundation, the Incubate Foundation and Think HQ.

About Incubate Foundation
Incubate Foundation is a social enterprise that connects young African Australians to opportunities through mentoring, networking events and capacity building programs. We are a leading African Australian community organisation that enables young people to reach their full potential through personal development, professional development (employment and entrepreneurship pathways) and positive narratives.

About Scanlon Foundation
The Scanlon Foundation aspires to see Australia advance as a welcoming, prosperous and cohesive nation particularly related to the transition of migrants into Australian society. The Foundation supports ongoing research into the indicators of social cohesion and the results of this research inform the Foundation’s activities. The Foundation makes grants to improve social cohesion in areas of greatest need within Australia.
